The Vermont Principal’s Association announced last week that St. Johnsbury Academy senior Jack Fannon of Adamant, Vermont, was selected to participate in the 2019 U.S. Senate Youth Program. As part of the program, Jack will spend a week in Washington, D.C. learning about the national government. Those selected to participate in the program also receive a scholarship of $10,000 toward their undergraduate studies. The scholarship and program are funded by the Hearst Foundation.

According to the U.S. Senate Youth Program website, “Student delegates will hear major policy addresses by senators, cabinet members, officials from the Departments of State and Defense and directors of other federal agencies, as well as participate in meetings with the president and a justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. All transportation, hotel and meal expenses will be provided by The Hearst Foundations. In addition, each delegate will also be awarded a $10,000 college scholarship for undergraduate studies, with encouragement to pursue coursework in history and political science.”

The USSYP Committee selects the two delegates from Vermont and includes Meredith Voutras, a retired principal; Jen Botzojorns, Superintendent of Caledonia North Supervisory Union; Brian Schaffer, Principal of Lamoille Union Middle and High School; Jim Abrams, Associate Principal Rice High School, Rachel Reynolds, Principal Enosburg Middle School, Jay Nichols, Executive Director of the Vermont Principals’ Association; and Dan Ryan, Principal of the Thomas Fleming School and Chair of the Committee.

St. Johnsbury Academy Headmaster Tom Lovett said, “What a great honor for Jack and his family! He certainly deserves it, and I am sure he will make the most of this opportunity. We are all fortunate to have young people like Jack interested in leadership and public service.”
