Good Neighbor Tuition Program

For Vermont, New Hampshire, and Quebec residents and property owners.

An independent school education requires a significant investment. Our Good Neighbor Tuition Program makes boarding here more affordable for families who live in or have a vacation home in Vermont, New Hampshire, or Quebec.

Our seven-day boarding program gives students the structure, support, and participation that is provided by on campus living. With such close proximity to the school, students’ families can visit for sporting events, dinner, shopping, and other family activities, and students can easily travel home for the weekend.

Our 2024-2025 Good Neighbor tuition of $42,000 is comparable to day school tuition charged by other independent and boarding schools in northern New England. Those families living in sending towns (towns in Vermont and New Hampshire with school choice for grades 9-12) can further reduce the tuition by the amount of the town’s contribution.

With nearly 200 boarding students, St. Johnsbury Academy is one of the largest boarding schools in Northern New England and one of the best private schools in Vermont. We enroll students from 50 communities in Northern Vermont and New Hampshire, many U.S. states, and 28 countries. In addition to small classes (average size of 12) and personal attention, our academic program provides access to 220 courses, including 30 Advanced Placement classes; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STeM) and technical offerings; four languages; and extensive opportunities in the visual and performing arts. St. Johnsbury Academy is the only school in northern New England to offer the AP Capstone Diploma program. Extracurricular programs feature more than 50 organized clubs and activities, international travel opportunities, and Division I athletics consisting of 48 teams participating in more than 20 different sports. The school is also recognized for its exceptional academic support programs.

Additional information about the Good Neighbor Tuition Program is available by contacting the Academy Admission Office at (802) 751-2130 or by emailing admissions@stjacademy.org. Please note, in order to qualify for our Good Neighbor Program, students and parents must be U.S. or Canadian citizens.

Financial Aid

We seek to enroll students of strong academic potential, good character and diverse backgrounds from families that understand and share the values of the school. Our goal is to provide the resources that would permit the success of each student in an environment that will foster respect for self and others. We provide many paths to success for a student body of diverse talents, interests, backgrounds and ages.

We believe in supporting the realization of our institutional mission through the development and implementation of a comprehensive financial aid program. We look to provide opportunities to students who would otherwise not have access to this level of education and array of opportunities.

St. Johnsbury Academy has a limited financial aid budget that is awarded based on need, to boarding students. For financial aid consideration, we recommend that online applications be complete by April 1st. St. Johnsbury Academy is utilizing the online service of School & Student Services (SSS) to process applications for financial aid. SSS will be the standard submission format for all applications.

SSS does not decide whether financial assistance will be given or how much to give; rather SSS provides a need-based financial aid analysis service which includes a recommendation of what a family should reasonably contribute toward tuition. All information from SSS is kept confidential. Results are reviewed by the Financial Aid Committee who makes decisions based on available funds. Financial aid offers are then sent to families. All students currently receiving financial aid must reapply each year.

Financial Aid Process for Domestic Students:

To begin your financial aid application, you will complete the SSS Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) then submit the required documents for our school. The PFS is a comprehensive application that will take some time to complete. You will need your most recent tax return before beginning the PFS. We also recommend reviewing SSS resources to help families with the financial aid process. They are found at School and Student Service — Family Resource Center.

We will communicate our financial aid decision to you. To make our decision, we use the information from the PFS as a starting point and consider our school policies, practices, and available budget.

How to complete your Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) online:

Go to the SSS Family Portal at School and Student Service — Family Portal.

Create your Family Portal account with your email address and a password. If you applied for financial aid last year, log into the Family Portal as a Returning Family using your same email address and password.

Complete a PFS for the upcoming Academic Year. You can log out at any time and return later to finish it.

When all PFS sections are complete with green checks, the Submit & Pay button activates. Follow prompts to the payment screen. The $51 fee is nonrefundable. Once your PFS is submitted, it cannot be withdrawn from the SSS system.

After you pay for and submit your PFS, access to “My Documents” activates to upload required documents by their deadlines as part of your application process.

The SSS code for St. Johnsbury Academy is 6528.

Financial Aid Process for International Students:

We offer a limited amount of financial aid to international students. Please contact admissions@stjacademy.org for information on how to apply.
