Northeast Kingdom Artisans Guild Presents Landscapes in Classical Realism

The Northeast Kingdom Artisans Guild will exhibit oil paintings by Rodney Reis, September 29 through November 17, at the gallery in St. Johnsbury.

Reis lives in Peacham. His professional training is grounded in classical realism, in the spirit of the Hudson River School, based on the specific materials of the Dutch Masters. His techniques are modeled on the methods and materials of Rembrandt and Van Dyck, and would fit in with the works of the Hudson River School of Bierstadt, Cropsey and Church.

Reis received his training at the Art Students League in New York City, where he is a lifetime member. He is also a member of the prestigious Salmagundi Art Club in New York City. Reis studied landscape oil painting with master painter Frank Mason. As a fine arts instructor at St. Johnsbury Academy, a private school in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, he passes on traditional techniques and knowledge to his students.

Reis has also perfected the art of crafting handcrafted gilt frames and includes them on request for specific commissions or gallery showings, including restoratåΩion of frames for museums and private collections. Reis acquires all materials used for his painting from sources all over the world. Painting and grinding mediums are specifically hand-crafted according to alchemist formulas handed down by generations of oil painting masters.

Reis’s Painting “Crawford Notch” was awarded Best in Show at the 2006 Salmagundi Member’s Exhibition. In 2011, his work “Steven’s Brook” was chosen for the 128th annual Salmagundi Member’s Exhibition.
