Dear St. Johnsbury Academy Families,

I have just a brief update for you this week. First, I am very happy to be back on campus meeting students, reconnecting with faculty, and watching the lively connections being made among us all. I met with the Art department this afternoon, and they shared they feel students are really engaging with energy and satisfaction in the work and with each other, which was so good to hear.

Hearing from some families and students, I am eager to make sure that we are doing the proper education around COVID for the community. Last year so much of our energy was focused on it, and we shared so much about our thinking, planning, and process, because it was new. Even though many of the same frustrations with masks and gatherings remain, conditions are different this year. We need a refresher so that everyone knows why we are doing what we’re doing—and why we are continuing to adjust as we encounter concerns. Even if we disagree about our measures, it’s important to have that shared understanding. So please look for a communication from the COVID Response team next week.

Our new turf field has hosted girls’ and boys’ soccer and the opening home football game last Friday. Field Hockey will have their inaugural outing next Wednesday against Hartford, and JV football will be under the lights on Monday vs. Lyndon Institute. There is another varsity home football game tonight under the lights—and I am hoping that many of you will join us! Please wear your masks while you’re in the crowd. We have students masked during large class meetings outdoors and we’d like to see people take the same precautions at the game.

Many other special things are happening, in clubs and activities, student government and everywhere else. You’ll read about them in next week’s newsletter, so please keep an eye out.

Keeping our school community safe is always our priority, in everything we do. Thank you for reaching out with your thoughts, and for partnering with us in these difficult times. Have a great weekend, everyone.
