March 19, 2018

St. Johnsbury Academy’s speaker at the school’s 175th Commencement taking place on Monday, June 4th, will be Greg Boardman, retired Vice Provost for Student Affairs at Stanford University.

As Vice Provost, Boardman served as the senior student affairs officer for Stanford, overseeing a professional staff of three hundred and a student body of 16,000. He was a member of the Provost’s and President’s Cabinet at Stanford, and was responsible for a wide range of student-oriented functions. Upon his retirement, he was appointed Vice Provost for Student Affairs, Emeritus. Earlier in his career, Boardman held roles of increasing responsibility at Tulane University and University of the Pacific.

Greg Boardman grew up in St. Johnsbury and graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1975. He continued his education at the University of Vermont, where he earned a B.A. in Mass Communications. He then received an M. Ed. Degree from Pennsylvania State University, specializing in Counselor Education and Student Personnel. He served on the St. Johnsbury Academy Board of Trustees from 2007 until 2017; in 2017 he was named Trustee Emeritus.

Boardman is looking forward to his time here in June. He said, “I am indeed honored to be invited to be this year’s Commencement speaker at the Academy. Coming back home to St. Johnsbury makes it even more special.  I look forward to sending the Class of 2018 off to their next adventure.”

Academy Headmaster Tom Lovett said, “During the entire time that Greg was on our Board of Trustees, I kept thinking how wonderful he’d be as a Commencement Speaker. His experience as Vice Provost, his knowledge of all of the aspects of campus life and healthy school cultures, and his love of his hometown and alma mater all give him multiple ways to relate to our graduates. He is a humble and well-spoken educator who has proven himself a leader at prestigious universities. I look forward to hearing what he has to say to this year’s graduating class and their families.”
