April 2, 2018

Vermont Governor Phil Scott will speak at St. Johnsbury Academy’s 175th Commencement as the special 175th Anniversary Speaker. The ceremony will take place on Monday, June 4, 2018 on the SJA campus.

Governor Phil Scott became the 82nd Governor of Vermont on January 5, 2017. He previously served three terms as Vermont’s Lieutenant Governor, and as a Senator for Washington County. Governor Scott grew up in Barre, Vermont, and graduated from Spaulding High School. Before becoming Vermont’s 82nd Governor, he was a small business owner and race car driver.

Academy Headmaster Tom Lovett said, “We are very excited and honored to have Governor Scott speak at our 175th Commencement as our 175th Anniversary Speaker. Not only has he welcomed our multiple championship teams to the statehouse this year, but he has also been a long-time supporter of our career and technical education (CTE) programs. Perhaps more than any other Governor, he has spoken to our Trade School Alumni body of the importance of CTE, and he understands the value of our comprehensive model that integrates technical education with academic and artistic disciplines.  He is a vocal supporter of the Academy’s unique brand of independent education, and he understands the Academy’s important place in Vermont’s educational landscape. I look forward to hearing his message as we celebrate this milestone in our school’s proud history and look forward to its bright future.”
