St. Johnsbury Academy has hired Kurt Zschau of St. Johnsbury as their new Director of Facilities. Zschau will join the Academy on February 5, 2018, reporting to Assistant Head Carol Lyon, and replacing current Director of Facilities Dennis Smith, who started working at the school in February 1994. After working with Zschau for several months, Smith will retire in June.

Prior to joining the Academy, Kurt Zschau worked as a Managing Broker at Four Seasons Sotheby’s International Realty in St. Johnsbury. He has concurrently been an owner and manager at Terrestreal, LLC, managing a portfolio of commercial and residential Vermont properties. His previous experience includes working as a real estate manager for Fountains Land, Inc., an area manager for New England Forestry Consultants, and a field forester for North Country Environmental and Forestry.

Zschau received an A.A. in Natural Resource Management from Sterling College and a B.S. in Forest Management from the University of Maine at Orono. He is a Licensed Vermont Real Estate broker, a member of the Board of Trustees of St. Johnsbury Athenaeum and a member of the St. Johnsbury Development Fund.

Assistant Head Carol Lyon said, “We are delighted that Kurt will be joining the Buildings and Grounds team at St. Johnsbury Academy.  He brings with him a solid background in property management, a thoughtful approach to sustainability and a strong commitment to the St. Johnsbury area.”

Headmaster Tom Lovett said, “I’ve known Kurt as a local businessman and Academy parent, and I’ve always been impressed with his professionalism, people skills, and work ethic. During the interview process for the Director of Facilities position, I became convinced even more of his thoughtfulness and expertise. I look forward to working with him as he takes on what has become a complex and extremely important job.”
