SJA Announces New Board Members

May 21, 2018

The Board of Trustees of St. Johnsbury Academy elected two new board members at their meeting earlier this month: Cathy Judd-Stein of Winchester, Massachusetts, and Erin Mayo of Fryeburg, Maine.

Cathy Judd-Stein ’78 serves as the Deputy Chief Legal Counsel, Office of the Governor, Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In that role, she provides legal oversight of board governance, compliance, risk management, litigation, procurement, employment matters, legislative issues and municipal finance. She has spent much of her career dedicated to public service, advising extensively on public conflicts of interest, governmental reforms, and health and human services. Cathy has served as an instructor for UMass Boston’s John W. McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies in “Ethics and Public Policy” since 2007. In 2000, Governor Paul Cellucci appointed her to serve as Deputy Legal Counsel and his ethics advisor. She remained in that position for Governors Jane Swift, Mitt Romney and Deval Patrick (through his transition), and then served as Governor Patrick’s Executive Director of the Judicial Nominating Commission. Cathy graduated from Dartmouth College and received a law degree from Harvard Law School.

Erin Mayo ’87 is Head of School at Fryeburg Academy in Fryeburg, Maine, a position she has held since 2012. Prior to Fryeburg, she was Head of the Upper School at the Episcopal School in Dallas, Texas. Earlier in her career, Erin spent several years working at the Academy. She started in the Admissions Office in 1991, then become an English teacher, Head of the English department, and Assistant Head for Academics. Erin is the older daughter of Bernier Mayo ’56, SJA Headmaster from 1981-2001. She received a B.A. from Georgetown University and an M.A. in English Language and Literature from Middlebury College.

Headmaster Tom Lovett said, “The addition of Cathy and Erin further strengthens our already strong Board. They add diversity and expertise, as well as a strong dedication to the Academy. More than anything, however, they are women of strong character, intellect and community spirit.  As such, they are admirably suited to help guide the Academy into the future.”

Jay Wright ’87, President of the SJA Board of Trustees, said, “Erin and Cathy are excellent additions to our Board.  With strong local roots and a breadth of experience from outside the Northeast Kingdom, they fit well our mission of serving the students of St. Johnsbury in the context of the wider world. I look forward to working with them both.”
