SCOPE will hold its first meeting of the new year next Tuesday, January 17, at 3:30 in Ranger 212. For those of you who don’t know, the acronym SCOPE stands for “Students Creating Opportunities for Positive Engagement.” The club is student-driven, research-based, and dedicated to providing students from all backgrounds the opportunity to promote grass-roots leadership initiatives on campus and in their local or global community. We always welcome new members, so please stop by and check us out. You can also see Mrs. Begin in Ranger 208 or Mrs. Morris in Ranger 212 with any questions. Hope to see you there!

 

Join the Outing Club for our first ice climbing trip of 2022!  No experience? No worries — we have highly trained staff that will teach you the techniques needed to scale frozen waterfalls. Step outside your comfort zone and start the semester out right by joining us this Sunday, January 16th. The trip will depart from Brantview Drive at 9:30 and will be back around 3pm. If you are interested, you must see Mr. Weiss for a boot fitting and get a permission slip from Campus Life.  See Mr. Weiss or Mr. Bowen for details about the trip.

Over the holiday break, the Academy Nordic team braved cold temperatures and sketchy trail conditions to compete in three meets. Both boys and girls finished in third place at the Craftsbury Freestyle Competition on December 21. The Hilltoppers Boys were paced by Sisu Lange and Nathan Lenzini, who finished in 16th and 18th place respectively. The girls were led by Siri Jolliffe, Mary Fowler, and Maren Giese who finished in 18th, 19th, and 20th respectively in a large, competitive field. 

 

 At the Hilltopper’s home meet on January 4 , youth ruled the day as freshman Sisu Lange and sophomore Nick Reed led the Hilltoppers boys with their 7th and 11th place finishes. The boys finished in third place overall. The Hilltopper girls were again led by strong races from Siri Jolliffe and Mary Fowler for their third-place overall finish. 

 

 Finally, on January 7, the Hilltoppers competed at Kingdom Trails against LI and BFA Fairfax. The girls finished first with Aliza Wright’s impressive first place finish, followed by Siri Jolliffe in 3rd, Maddy Blanchard in 7th, and Delaney Rankin in 8th. The boys finished in 2nd place overall behind a strong BFA Fairfax team. Sisu Lange finished in 2nd place followed by a Nathan Lenzini in 7th. The Hilltopper Nordic team races today at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center.

 

Over break the indoor track team competed in 4 meets at UVM. Evan Thornton-Sherman leads the state in the 1,000m, 1500m and 3000m runs.  Brooke White is second in the shot put and weight throw, and Andrew Thornton-Sherman is 3rd in the 600m rankings. The team placed 3rd out of 15 competing schools at last weekend’s meet.
