Spanish I (Standard)

Credits: 1

This beginning Spanish course is for the student who has little or no knowledge of the language or experience studying a language. Through a variety of learning tasks students recognize, react to, and use the basic structures, grammar, and vocabulary of the Spanish language and develop an awareness of the cultures of the Spanish- speaking world. Students are encouraged to be creative with the language, independently expand vocabulary, and take an active role in mastering language skills. While development of reading and writing skills is included in the course, the emphasis is on listening comprehension and speaking skills.

Prerequisite: Students who score below the 40th percentile on standardized reading comprehension tests should work on their basic English skills before beginning the study of Spanish.
