St. Johnsbury Academy Students Honored for Advanced Placement Success

St. Johnsbury Academy has offered AP courses since the 1980s and continues to experience great success in the program. A total of 242 St. Johnsbury Academy students took 468 Advanced Placement exams in May 2024. These totals represent a significant increase over the 206 students taking 426 Advanced Placement exams in May 2023. The school’s 2024 passing rate, determined by the percentage of students who scored three or more points out of a possible five on an exam, was 83.0%, well above both the 2024 state average of 73.94% and the national average of 69.6% (U.S. public high schools).

  

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program provides motivated and academically prepared students the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, allowing motivated students to stand out from their peers in college admissions, earn college credit, skip introductory college classes, and develop college-level skills. St. Johnsbury Academy currently offers 32 Advanced Placement courses.

  

AP Scholars

 

An impressive 79 Academy students were honored for exceptional performance on their AP exams: 32 were recognized as AP Scholar with Distinction for receiving an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more exams; 13 students received AP Scholar with Honor for an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more exams; and 34 students received the distinction of AP Scholar for receiving a 3 or higher on three or more AP exams.

AP Capstone Diploma

In addition, 24 students received either the AP Capstone Diploma or the AP Seminar and Research Certificate. To qualify for the AP Capstone Diploma, students must complete a two-year course sequence, AP Seminar followed by AP Research, and earn scores of three or higher on the subsequent exams and at least four other AP exams. Students successfully completing only the AP Seminar and AP Research courses and earn at least a three on fewer than four other AP exams earn the AP Seminar and Research Certificate.

 

St. Johnsbury Academy members of the Class of 2024 who received the AP Capstone Diploma were Kaia Anderson, Nathaniel Bernier, Aidan Brody, Harper Crance, McKenna Crance, Maaike Dam, Honora Davis, Greer Kennedy, Selin Kilic, Esme Kimber, Ivy Pavick, Laura Ponoran, Eli Rexford, Dolma Sherpa, and Brooke White.

 

Those who received the AP Seminar and Research Certificate were Kape Clements, Bennett Crance, Muzaffar Hussein, Siri Jolliffe, Laura Moreno Manon, Simone Morris, Mary Przybycien, Peyton Qualter, and Anabelle Reisner.

 

St. Johnsbury Academy’s Dean of Faculty, Steve Jolliffe, who has been an important proponent of the Academy’s AP program over the past 20 years, said, “I remain deeply impressed by our students’ performance on the AP exams. Their strong scores reflect not only their own curiosity and commitment to hard work but also the dedication of their teachers, who provide the tools, knowledge, and guidance necessary for success.”

 

Headmaster Sharon Howell said, “We are always proud of the academic accomplishments of our students, and the impressive annual AP results serve as proof of their academic achievement and hard work. I am especially proud of our having received the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award. Our young women do great things, and again, this is proof.”
