Colwell Speaker Series Welcomes Weatherhead Fellow Lorenza Fontana

April 23, 2018

St. Johnsbury Academy’s Colwell Speaker Series welcomes Lorenza Fontana, a Fellow at Harvard’s Weatherhead Center and former research associate in the Department of Politics and International Studies at Open University in the United Kingdom. She will give speak about child labor in Latin America. This event will take place on Friday, April 27 at 7:00 p.m. in the Mayo Center and is free and open to the public.

Ms. Fontana is a Marie Curie Research Fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, Harvard University. Previously, she was an associate researcher at the University of Sheffield and at the Open University, UK. Her research interests include conflict studies and contentious politics, human rights and global justice, new models of multicultural and pluri-national citizenship and post-neoliberal governance.

Glen Ehrean, Director of the Colwell Center, said, “Ms. Fontana has spent considerable time in Bolivia, working with child laborers who have unionized in order to claim their right to work. She has a first-hand understanding of the challenges impoverished children and families face in developing countries, and she knows how international human rights can impact or fail to impact the lives of marginalized individuals. I look forward to learning how peoples’ lives are changing and what can be done to bring about positive developments for children and families in socioeconomically challenged communities.”
