College Credit
The Academy has a number of course options that can result in college credit for students. We offer a dual enrollment program with Southern New Hampshire University. We also offer many AP courses and were selected in the rollout of the AP Capstone Diploma program.
Dual Enrollment
Southern New Hampshire University
Students can earn college credit through our partnership with Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), a pioneer in delivering dual-enrollment courses to students.
Our faculty teaches SNHU on the SJA campus after they earn adjunct-teaching approval through the university. Credits are generally accepted by all colleges and universities, allowing students to greatly reduce the cost of post-secondary education. The courses and grades will appear on an official university transcript; the cost for three SNHU credits is comparable to the cost of an AP exam.
Detailed course descriptions can be found in SNHU’s undergraduate catalog. Courses are currently available in Literature, Composition, Creative Writing, Calculus, Applied Calculus, U.S. History, and Microeconomics.
Advanced Placement
The Academy offers an exceptionally wide range of AP courses. Successful completion of an AP exam is recognized by many major colleges and universities for credit. The Academy offers 31 Advanced Placement courses including: AP Capstone Program (AP Seminar and AP Research), English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, United States History, European History, United States Government and Politics, Microeconomics, Psychology, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Statistics, Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics I, Physics II, Physics C: Mechanics, Physics C: course selection guide 3 Electricity and Magnetism, Environmental Science, Studio Art: Drawing and Painting, Studio Art: 2D, Studio Art: 3D, Music Theory, French Language and Culture, Spanish Language, Japanese Language and Culture. Students who take Advanced Placement courses are required to take the nationally administered Advanced Placement exam in early May.
AP Capstone Diploma
St. Johnsbury Academy is one of a short list of schools worldwide that offers the AP Capstone Diploma program. SJA was selected to offer the program by the College Board from among more than 18,000 independent and public schools. The other U.S. boarding schools selected to participate during the first year of the program were Choate Rosemary Hall, Taft School, and Deerfield Academy.
Completion of the new AP Capstone Diploma involves a two-course sequence: AP Seminar followed by AP Research. Students who complete the AP Seminar and Research courses and earn scores of three or higher on the subsequent exams, as well as on at least four other AP exams, will earn the AP Capstone Diploma.
Students successfully completing only the AP Seminar and AP Research courses and exams will earn the AP Seminar and Research Certificate. The Academy has a long history of offering AP courses, dating back to the 1980s, and currently offers over 31 academic and fine art AP courses.
