Gymnastics @ State Meet (Essex – Regal Gym)
The SJA gymnastics team had a fantastic season finale finishing second at the VT High school Gymnastics State Meet. The SJA team went in seeded second with a 9 win-1 loss record and knew it would be a tough competition with four other teams vying for that second-place spot as well.
The team started their competition on vault. Lizzy Jones started the evening with a solid landing of her tsuk (one of the toughest vaults of the competition) and placed 3rd with a 9.15 with teammate, Anna Cushing placing 4th with an 8.65. Moving on to the uneven bars, Jones once again performed a beautiful routine earning 2nd with a 9.525. Beam was the team’s toughest event of the meet but there were highlights throughout the event. Jones connected her two acro skills with flight – one of the tougher requirements (a dive roll to a back handspring) and earned a 6th place tie with a 9.225. Floor was the team’s last event and a great way to end the competition with Jones placing 5th with a 9.475, Cushing placing 7th with a 9.45 and freshman Zoe Glentz Brush posting a 9.3.
Glentz Brush placed 14th all-around with a 33.3, Cushing earned 10th with a 34.105 and Jones closed out her high school career with her personal best all-around score and 2nd place with a 37.375.
All three seniors- Jones, Cushing, and fellow captain, Sabrina Lamar along with teammates Glentz Brush, Katy Noonan, Aniela Thompson and Lydia Zetong Wang all had bright spots throughout the meet. Lamar and Thompson performed their best floor routines of the year, Noonan performed her fly away dismount for the first time in a competition, Glentz Brush- competing all around as a freshman- competed her back handspring on beam for the first time, and Wang entertained the crowd with her artistic floor routine that showed off her grace and flexibility.
